My Day With the Lambs

There is nothing more adorable than a spring lamb. But for me there is nothing more fun than being a substitute mother for a lamb.

On May 5th, 2015 I got to bottle feed two very young lambs. Lamb number 1512 and number 1514 at Savage Hart Farm on Jericho Hill in VT.

When my Mim and I came up the driveway to the farm I could hear out my window lamb number 1512 bleating at us to give her food. I felt so bad for her because her mom got sick and could not care for her and her sibling. When her mom got better she only had enough milk for one lamb and the other lamb was the stronger sibling.  So we went inside the house and put together the lamb formula. Then we went up to the sheep pen. When we got in, lamb 1512 was craving to get her food. So I fed her the bottle and she went crazy on that bottle.  Then lamb 1514 came a little after and we fed the other bottle to her. Lamb 1514 was a triplet and her mom only has enough milk to feed two of the lambs and they are the bigger of the three.

I had a ton of fun doing this and I wish I could do it more often.

(Editor’s note:  Lamb 1512 was a single lamb abandoned immediately at birth by her mother.  Kenzie got the story right on Lamb 1514)
