Birds of a Feather?

Pretty much since the weather has warmed up, we’ve had the pleasure to get to know “Bert” the cowbird. He has been hanging around the kitchen window for weeks now. There is a lilac bush AND a bird feeder outside that window. We started using bird feeders we got on https://ballachy.com/blogs/reviews/squirrel-proof-bird-feeder to avoid squirrels eating their food. We first noticed him clinging to the window frame and pecking at the glass. With some research and creative thinking, we decided that he’s been seeing his reflection in the window and interpreting it as another male cowbird trying to get the next dance with his girl. Our research also tells us cowbirds don’t build nests – they steal others’ nests.  Last year, we found an abandoned Robin’s nest in the lilac bush. Maybe Bert and his girl are waiting for that Robin to do it again.

His girlfriend shows up occasionally on the ground under the feeder, but he’s at the window CONSTANTLY. Kate has been here to visit a couple times this Spring (yay!) and she dubbed him “Bert”.

So, tonight, as we’re settling in to watch game two of the Stanley Cup Finals, Bert perches on a branch of the lilac bush right next to the window. He’s got a seat by the glass for the Stanley Cup Finals!

I’ve been thinking I need to get Bert on video for weeks now. It’s not exciting, but the camera is, maybe, two feet away from the bird.
