Last summer I posted a video of the ladies enjoying new grass after we moved their paddock. In the winter they eat old grass – hay. Luckily for us (and them) we are getting second cut hay from George which they usually enjoy. Some bales more than others. It seems to be sort of hit and miss, but I’d say they like 4 of every 5 bales we break open for them.
Yesterday afternoon was gorgeous around 4 pm – calm, not a cloud in the sky, and the days are definitely getting longer. I headed out to grain, water, and hay the flock a little earlier than usual.
I’ve noticed lately that the girls are getting even more territorial as they scramble for grain which we put into two homemade Home Depot paint bucket troughs. Remembering that one trough was lying unused in the west field, I decided to walk out and get it. With 3 troughs the scuffling should be reduced somewhat.
So I walked down to the west field and the ladies dutifully followed me. With nothing in my hands – no troughs, no buckets holding the grain – they still followed me willingly. After picking up the trough and turning back toward the barn yard, the ladies realized it was a bluff. They BOLTED back to the gate, Hilary jumping straight up in the air a few times as she is known to do.
Once everyone had grain, and I’d refilled water buckets and hay feeders, I thought I’d hang out by the girls’ feeder. They could care less. I ran back to the house, got the camera, and shot most of the girls eating dinner. Couldn’t interest Dolly and Daisy. Click on the photo. I hope you appreciate the soundtrack.
