Update: Ella and her son, #1620

Despite three days in the stanchion, with breaks to see if the situation was turning, Ella has no interest in nursing her baby boy and instead focuses all her mothering on her daughter.  We did see a moment when #1620 was nursing but it was only because his sister stood very close to him blocking mom’s view.  No doubt she thought it was #1619, her daughter, chugging away. Of course, we can’t count on this being the standard routine. The boy has taken to the bottle very well.  We’re out there every four hours and he generally takes about 4.5 ounces. This morning he chugged down 6 ounces since we don’t do a middle of the night feeding. Ella knows he’s around, but offers zero comfort. Often he sits by himself, but one time I went out there and he was cuddled up against Martha and one of her lambs.  Martha sat there like, “sure, why not.”  Thank you, Martha.

Update to the update:  Sunday evening around 10 pm, I went up to the barn with #1620’s last bottle of the day.  I found him resting next to his sister AND his mother.  A good sign!  Also, he took very little milk from the bottle.  Maybe he wasn’t hungry because he got his fill from mom?  Only way we’ll know is to see it for ourselves.  Monday morning, he chugged his first bottle of the day from Peg.

I remember a spring (September) lambing season in New Zealand, and the owner corralled mom with wooden “horses” into a corner so her baby could get her milk. Mama did not recognize the little one so wanted no part of him. The farmer also “lost” a lamb so used the furry skin/coat to disguise the lil guy so he could get his meals. Amazing, Ms Peggy… I am so impressed with your stamina!
